Purity in Death book 15 JD Robb 9780749934415 Books

Another great installment - #15, to be exact - to the In Death series. In this one, a vigilante group begins to target alleged criminals - child predators - who have escaped punishment by the law. The weapon? A computer-transmitted virus that infects the brain of the user, causing intense pressure inside the brain that always, ALWAYS, results in the death of the user; and often the deaths of innocent bystanders, including an EDD-cop.

McNab gets injured OTJ; Mavis announces her pregnancy. The entire team works together, along with Jamie Lingstrom from Ceremony in Death, who is a computer whiz, to solve the case.

Great dialogue as always, including this bit between Eve and Summerset:

"She’d barely stepped in, taken that first breath of cool, clean air, when Summerset, Roarke’s majordomo, appeared in the foyer like an unwelcome vision. “Yes, I missed the dinner,” she said before he could open his mouth. “Yes, I’m a miserable failure as a wife and a poor example of a human being. I have no class, no courtesy, and no sense of decorum. I should be dragged naked into the streets and stoned for my sins.”

Summerset raised one steel gray eyebrow. “Well, that seems to cover it.”

"Good, saves time.” She started up the stairs. “Is he back?”

"Just.” A little annoyed she’d given him no opportunity to criticize, he frowned after her. He’d have to be quicker next time.

********
And this exchange between Roarke and Feeney:

"But why don’t we settle the matter like Irishmen?”

Both amusement and challenge lit Feeney’s face. “You want to fight, or you want to drink?”

Roarke laughed. “I was thinking of the other manner of settling things. Gambling.” Roarke dug a coin out of his pocket. “Heads or tails?” he asked. “You call.”

*********
Banter between Eve and Peabody is always terrific:
"If you need to vent, go out there on the kitchen terrace. Scream your lungs out.”

"Is that what you do?”

"Sometimes. Sometimes I kick inanimate objects. Sometimes I jump Roarke and have jungle sex. The last,” she said after a beat, “is not an option for you.”

"But I think it would really make me feel better, and be a more productive member of the investigative team.” Haha! I love Peabody!
******
But maybe best of all was Eve's bafflement when Mavis shared her news with Eve:

"I’m knocked up.”

"Fine. We’ll cover that. We can—” Her brain simply went on hold, as if someone had flicked a switch that shut down all the circuits. When it clicked back, there seemed to be some sort of blip blanking out basic reasoning functions. “What did you say?”

"I’m knocked up.” Mavis let out a snorting laugh, then slapped her hands over her mouth. Her eyes, as purple as her shoes today, danced like a pair of chorus girls.

“You’re . . . You . . .” Stunned into stammering, Eve stared at Mavis’s bare midriff, at the trio of belly dangles that sparkled from her navel. “You got something growing in there?”

Her hands still over her mouth, Mavis nodded rapidly. “A baby.” The laugh spurted through her fingers.

Oh. Eve. She is one-of-a-kind!

Purity in Death book 15 JD Robb 9780749934415 Books Reviews

Since I have read every "in Death" title twice (except my least favorite titles), I decided to identify those titles in the series which are my favorite.

What do my favorites have in common?

1. These are the ones that have (for me) interesting cases.
2. Funny interactions between Eve and the rest of the world. Eve has a unique tale on the world and her comments are often hilarious.
3. Because of her abnormal childhood, she odd lapses in her education and social development that she is only now overcoming as an adult. It's fun for me to watch this fictional character learn to become the best human being she can be despite that horrid childhood.
4. Lots of page time for the ongoing collection of returning characters. I love her supporting characters. The cops on her team and her friends.
5. Some other unknown quality that calls to me.

Things that are NOT considered in my favorite ratings
1. The sex scenes between Eve and Roarke. Not a factor for me. Most of the time, the pages of description of their sexual couplings could be omitted without changing the book for me. I know from reading the reviews of others that the sexual relationship and the love relationship between Eve and Roarke are all that matters to some readers. I am not one of those readers.
2. Foul language. Yeah, I was shocked when I read my first "in Death" book by the prevalence of foul language. Now I mostly ignore it.
3. Whether other reviewers like the book or hate it. I decide on my own whether I like something. My parents taught me to think for myself.

Why this title is a favorite How do you catch a team of killers who are vigilantes? Who the public thinks is doing them a favor? Eve is fighting a team of killers who cross an ethical boundary. Is JD Robb (Nora Roberts) making a statement in this book about people who take justice into their own hands? I hope so. A lot of people do not realize the danger of nor the steps to anarchy.
Eve, Roarke and crew are at it again -- making New York unsafe for murderers. This time people are being murdered remotely and through their computers. What might appear to be a convoluted and terribly difficult, if not impossible task, of discovering how the murders could be accomplished is not so tough for Eve and her determination "to stand for the dead." As usual with Ms. Robb's In Death series, I caught up in the chase and solving the mystery. But what keeps me coming back (other than really intelligent writing) are the evolving relationships within Eve's circle of colleagues and friends and Eve truly beginning to understand the idea of family. Superb.
There has never been a computer virus like this one. The computer runs fine, no evidence of any infiltration, but the user doesn't feel very well. Initially, mild headache but it gets worse and worse and the eyes, ears, nose start to bleed--madness followed by death, if holed up and alone. Collateral damage if others are around. Absolute Purity Achieved screams the computer screen.
EDD with Roarke, Feeney, McNab and brilliant Jamie rush to find a way to access the innards of an infected computer without harming themselves--what is the program and where did it originate. In the meantime, Dallas and Peabody try to connect the dots--what do the victims have in common, who do they have in common, why would someone or someones want to destroy them. This is one of the most intense and frightening of the series that I've read so far. Terrifying while the scourge continues, terrifying at the possibility of something like this happening, terrifying to see who is behind the movement.
