This novella had potential. The story is very cute, with no real dastardly deeds going on. A duke masquerades as his cousin, meets and falls in love with a country vicar's daughter, etc. etc.

I enjoyed the story, although it really needed just a bit more polish. It was going along quite well and then suddenly....it ends with a very contrived plot twist. It's like the author had hit her page limit and had to wrap things up in 3 pages or less. It just didn't go with the rest of the story and I was disappointed.

Still, it's cute and since I downloaded it as a free selection, I'll give it a pass and 3 stars.

The Duchess of Love edition by Sally MacKenzie Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Characterizations were poor. Romance was only driven by both lead characters having seen each other nude at a swimming pond. An attempt at an "Importance of being Earnest" thread didn't provide the laughs another author might've produced. Not a clean book, but not erotic either. Just sort of middll'in.
The last book I read was gloomy and full of 'downers', so I wanted something light, silly & fun. I got it all in "The Duchess of Love". A novella - or really a sample of more of the author's work to come, it was a definite change of pace. If you have read any romance novels of this era, then you will see a familiar basic story line. Head over heels in love at first sight, societal complications with proper protocol, a misunderstanding between potential lovers, rude and snooty society matrons meddling, servants who know more than their bosses, and so on. I don't think I could really spoil the ending - I'm sure we all expect it, but you should read it for yourself, and see if I guessed wrong. A lot packed into a few pages, so there was not a lot of room to develop the characters or the story, but it is a sample of the author's style that may tempt you to read more from her.
Too hurried to earn a 4, but the potential is there.
I'm all for trying new authors so when this author was recommended to me I started looking for her books in all the used bookstores I frequent but I just never saw any so when this one came up as a kindle freebie I jumped on it.

I was actually surprised by how much I liked this book considering its a take on the classic Pride & Prejudice and we all know that I detest Pride & Prejudice (I know it's shocking) and all the re-tellings of it really don't help endear the original to me.

However, there was just something about the way the author wrote this one that I felt compelled to like it more than any other re-telling I've read. What I think really worked for the author was that used her sense of humour quite a lot in the story of Venus and the Duke of Greycliffe.

Plus unlike Jane Austen you can tell that the author wrote this just for the fun of writing it and that she intended for it to be a story that is light, easy and fun to read. I think it's the perfect read for a commute or just sitting on the beach beacause of it only being 106 pages long. If you like romance, and want a light hearted read this one may just be up your alley and for that I have no problem recommending it to a few of my friends. Just don't go into reading it thinking the writing will be superb it's just a fun bit of fluff to be enjoyed.
Did I know this was a novella? YES! Did I expect an unsatisfying ending? NO! Many author's can cram a lot into a novella and it feel satisfying, but I wanted more in this.

I rated it 4 stars, because it was funny, clever and entertaining. I thought it was unique how they met and the reason he wanted to switch places with his cousin, sounded spot on.

We get very very mild lovemaking -one time. HEA and no cliffhanger for our couple. But, what about the sister, did she get her HEA? Yes, we know it all worked out, but it was boom to the finish line. I wanted to know more of the after they crossed it. Oh, well, can't have everything. (ljb)
A beautiful romance novel. Venus Collingsworth decides to take a dip in the cool pond on a hot summers day. The land is now in the hands of the Duke of Greycliffe. Venus hopes to set her sister, who always has her nose in a book, up with the Duke when they arrive. Duke and his cousin Andrew Valentine have arrived earlier then expected. When the housekeeper mixes up of who is who between the gentleman, the Duke decides to play it out. He just once, since taking on this royal role, would like nothing better than to be just a normal man. Drew is introduced to Venus as he is surveying the grounds an comes upon the beautiful, naked woman in the pond. I thought it was a bit slow at first, then the story line really picked up into a beautiful love story. I was terribly disappointed though in the ending. The author left me high and dry, and I felt she wass just trying to hurry and get the book finished. It really is a shame, as it had so much potential of having a fantastic ending.
I happen to be a fan of novellas, but I didn't realize this was a novella. I just went back and looked, and yes, down below all of the reviews it says that this ebook is 31,000 words. The publisher needs to place this statement after the description, not the reviews. That being said - I liked this little story, although there were a couple of things that I rolled my eyes over -mainly the character's names. Venus and Aphrodite? Really? Okay...moving on. The story was humorous and the characters well developed in a short amount of time, but I had a hard believing that Venus could go from angry to in love in the space of a couple of paragraphs. Beyond that, I found the novella entertaining and a fun read. I like this author's style and the humor she adds to her books (although I think the "naked" meet ups are a bit overused at this point -time to come up with something new).
