The Soul Stealer Rogue Angel Book 12 Alex Archer 9780373621309 Books Reviews

Since this was my first Rogue Angel book, I had no preconceived ideas about the characters or knowledge of their history. Unlike some reviewers, I had no problems with a character being introduced as an old friend who had not appeared in a previous book. Even if I had read other books, it probably wouldn't have bothered me.

Since I had nothing to base my expectations on, I wasn't bothered by the decision making of the characters. While I didn't agree with every decision that every character made it didn't take away from the story. People have been known to make decisions that are not always the brightest.

I did however like how the author was able to keep the action flowing with a minimum amount of characters. No fun when the author introduces so many characters that you have to create a scorecard to keep them straight.

I would suggest if you did what I did and started reading the series with the current release I would take a peek at [...] it has some valuable background information. (I'm still planning to buy the first book in the series.)

The descriptions of the characters and setting were perfect. You were able to picture things in your mind's eye without being bogged down in the details.

Bottom line I found this book to be an excellent blend of action adventure, science fiction and mystery. Not heavy on any one genre but an enjoyable blending of all three.
I am a die-hard RA fan. I love the series.

This episode, however, is horrible. Horrible, horrible, horrible.

Whoever wrote this one apparently had never cracked a book or listened to the audio version (which is fabulously produced). The "Annja" in this episode is gullible, naïve, and downright ditsy at times, which is the antithesis of the character in the rest of the series.

By the second half of this I found myself constantly saying to myself "WTF?!?!!?!"

In addition to the poor continuity of character, the plot line goes haywire. I'm all for a fair amount of the suspension of disbelief one needs to enjoy a series like this, but this goes too far and just becomes stupid and inane. Instead of trying to come up with an original idea, this author falls takes the worst of Frankenstein, X-Men, and Dr Jekyll and combines them into a ridiculous ending.

Buy other RA episodes. Leave this one alone.
Prelude so I'm at my local library looking for an interesting book to read, and I come across an entire shelf devoted to "Rogue Angel." I quickly find out that there are about 50 books in the series going back to 2007 as it turns out. This was the earliest book in the series available so I thought I'd give it a chance.

The Soul Stealer is the 12th novel of the Rogue Angel series, published in May 2008. Since about 5 to 6 books in the series come out per year I feel obliged to give the month along with the year. The series must be written by several authors with that many books coming out per year.

The story is set in remote north eastern Siberia, which is completely fascinating in it's own right, since few books or movies are set in such a region. The story has seemingly multiple endings, which the reader understands cannot be since there is still quite a bit more pages left. Each "ending" unlocks more of the mystery of the story. Involved are property rights, fearsome creatures, and action including that by our protagonist and her sword from "another dimension" or wherever that appears as needed. Although the portrayal's of Russians aren't exactly correct, the ruthlessness and deception are approaching it. The deception regarding property rights is not too far off. Many older 'babushka's' lived in central city apartments when property didn't mean anything in the Soviet Union. But when it finally fell apart, the Russian Mafia came in and offered 'nice' apartments in the 'nice' suburbs in exchange. In reality these elderly got crappy aptments in drab concrete Russian-made suburbs and the Russian Mafia made a killing in reselling the prime real-estate aptments high-desired smack in the middle of the action in cities. And who the eff knows what the Soviet Union and Russia did/does in Siberia. This was a ruthless totalitarian empire. So it's bizarre when reviewers complain about 'experiments' made in the Soviet Union, while they then flock to stories of Nazi's delving in the supernatural with the Arc of the Covenant or whatnot.

This is fun, action novel. The novel doesn't really come across as anything more than that, and so it delivers. For those that complain about the lack of relics, it's laughable. So in other Rogue Angel novels, they tolerate an action packed novel to esoteric or exotic locales with an ass-kicking 'heroine' using a magical sword of Joan of Arc to read the relic sections of the story?! There is a relic. It's a type of muzzle. A little is written of it, and the mystery of it's origin is set.
While this novel serves as a fun little stand alone novel with an interesting plot, it is NOT your standard Rogue Angel book. No relic, no conspiracy (well, there is one, but its loose and not shocking, interesting, or plausible in any way)

While I liked this book as a story, it fell out of the range of a good Rogue Angel story. Don't start with this book, but if you follow these novels and can stand a mediocre one, than read it, with low expectations. You may be slightly surprised.
Wow. After reading the other reviewer's comments, I have to totally disagree. I have also followed this series regularly, and I had been disappointed in the past about some of the anticlimactic endings of the others. This one was a refreshing change -- you thought you knew what was going on, but that conflict was somewhat resolved in the middle of the book. The story took a bit of a turn after that and got a little more interesting rather than tapering off. I liked this one and look forward to the next.
